Vice Principal Clyde Brawell looks on.
CONYERS, Ga.-- BAT Logistics, one of the fastest growing 3PL providers of transportation services, awarded the winners of the Transportation Art Contest at Sims Elementary School in Conyers, Ga. The seven students were announced and awarded their Visa gift card prizes during a ceremony at the school today, Dec. 17.

For the Pre-K to First Grade category, Yesenia Cheban won first place, Maleah Miller won second place and Christina Luong won third. Jaelyn Miller was the sole winner in the Second to Third Grade category. In the Fourth to Fifth Grade category, Tony Silva won first place, Max Thomas won second place and Janie Carroll won third place.

First place winners all won $75 gift cards, second place won $40 and third place won $20 so that they each could purchase their very own new mode of transportation. In addition to the gift cards (and large symbolic checks!) the students received at the ceremony, their artwork will be posted on BAT's Facebook page throughout the week for all to admire.

In art class starting in mid-November, students were asked to draw and color a mode of transportation. The entries were judged in three grade groupings: Pre-K/Kindergarten/First, Second/Third and Fourth/Fifth.

The contest did not cost the school, students or community anything. BAT even provided the art classes with paper and markers for the contest. Last year was the first year of the contest.

Echo: Sad News

The news coming from Connecticut today is heartbreaking. We are deeply saddened by the loss of so many lives, a majority of which were young children, according to reports. Those of us with children will hug them a little longer and tighter tonight.

Whether you want them to or not, it's possible your child could find out something about today's events. Sesame Street shared these PSAs today to help parents and children deal with what they are seeing and hearing.

Also, this can be a hard time of year for many people for different reasons. While we do not yet know the cause of today's events, it can be a good reminder to check on family and friends who may need some extra emotional support. Many times, cries for help go ignored. Be there and provide the support needed.

As of November, the trucking industry has added 35,700 jobs this year.

Echo: Trains Carry The Holidays

Earlier today, we shared on our Facebook page an infographic from our friends at CSX. The graphic states that one intermodal train can carry the load of 280 trucks.

That's a lot of trucks. But, we already knew that little fact.

We love trains year-round, but trains seem to be quite popular with everyone else during the holidays. They chug around Christmas trees, star in popular holiday tales, are given as gifts to children and even host wintry rides featuring a big guy in red.

Trains are also transporting the popular items families want to give and get this season.

To learn about the history of trains, visit CSX's Always Moving app on Facebook.

Spelunking: Being Thankful

We at BAT Logistics hope everyone enjoyed time with their families and had a happy Thanksgiving. This is the season of giving, and our company is fortunate to be able to make donations to two charities this year- Fisher House Foundation and Operation Homefront.

Homes are built on the grounds of every major military and Veteran's Affairs hospitals so families can be near their loved one- free of charge- and provide support. The program originated in 1990 and has provided more than four million days of lodging.

Operation Homefront provides emergency financial and other assistance (like counseling and recovery support) to military families. Financial assistance to paid directly lenders, mechanics, contractors, hospitals-- where the family owes money. The organization was created in 2002 and has provided more than $128 million dollars of funding to help military families.

Spelunking: Top Of The Mountain

Marissa Rodriguez and her son have climbed a lot of mountains of life together, but the most rewarding one was at Mt. Rushmore while on vacation in Colorado.

"It was beautiful," Rodriguez said.

She loves this photo of her son because it shows his personality and shows that he was having a good time.

Echo: Sandy Delays Freight

Many businesses sent out emails last week letting customers know that order delivery could be delayed due to the storm affecting the Northeast. Behind the scenes, freight shipments were also delayed.

As of Nov. 1, CSX Transportation reopened all of its intermodal terminals and started train service in the areas affected by Superstorm Sandy. However, they still expect a 72 delay on freight traffic, due to congestion in the Northeast region.

Anyone affected is thanked for their patience in this unique situation.

Echo: Red Cross Needs Donations For Disaster Relief

Superstorm Sandy left a trail of destruction along the Northeast, especially on the Jersey Shore, Staten Island, New York City and Connecticut. There are still power outages and trees crushing homes as far away as Pennsylvania, West Virgina and Ohio.

There are no words to describe how we at BAT Logistics feel for those who lost everything in this massive storm.

Anyone who wishes to help should do so through the American Red Cross. To contribute funds,
visit www.redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Already, Dollar General has stepped forward by making a $50,000 to the American Red Cross. They are also providing opportunities for customers to make donations.

Spelunking: Coffee Talk

You wouldn't want to see Stephen Sinclair without his coffee. That jolt of java keeps him alert and smiling throughout his day at BAT Logistics and, well, anywhere.
So, it's no surprise that his travel mug is this National Accounts team member's most treasured item at work.

"I would be lost without it," Stephen said.

Spelunking: Baby on Board

Is this the new BAT mascot?

No, it's just Executive VP/Owner Jarrod Marinello's son, Dylan, dressed as a bat for Halloween last year.

Marinello treasures his now 18-month-old son, but he will have another treasure this spring. We are happy to announce his wife is pregnant, and this time, it's a girl! Baby Marinello is due to arrive mid-April.

Spelunking: Orange and Proud

There are awards, and then there are trophies. Steve Barnes, the team leader of our Central Dispatch team, is proud of the sales trophy he has won in each of the past three quarters. To win, a team member has to sign up the most customers in a quarter.

Also in the photo is Steve's best friend and team member, Krysten Parrish, holding his cherished Syracuse Otto the Orange toy.

"My family is from Syracuse, New York, and I am a die hard Syracuse basketball fan. Like crazy die hard," he said.

Spelunking: Toyman in the Cave

Every office has at least one person with a desk area decorated with toys. BAT's person with the most unique toys is Joe Kier from our National Accounts team. He has Gogo's, small collectible characters that can be played with like marbles or jacks.

According to Gogo's website, the toys are based on games children in ancient Greece used to play using sheep knuckle bones. We at BAT are certainly happy the toys are interesting characters and not sheep bones...

Don't forget to join us next Friday as we take you on another dive into our BAT cave.

Spelunking: Cindy's Treasured Item

Before the weekend begins, we thought you'd like to take a dive into our BAT cave and learn a little more about our team.

Our Director of Sales, Cindy Moreno, treasures the pallet of sticky notes on her desk. Just looking at all the notes sticking to papers (and on top of other notes!) on her wall show how much she uses them.

"If I didn't have my sticky notes, I would be lost," Cindy said.

Check back next week to learn about someone else on our team...

Echo: Dollar General Raises Funds for Literacy Foundation

Did you know Dollar General's co-founder, J.L. Turner, couldn't read when he started his company?

Since its founding, Dollar General has been committed to supporting literacy and education. In 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation was established to improve the functional literacy of adults and families by providing grants to nonprofit organizations dedicated to the advancement of literacy.

"Dollar General believes learning to read, receiving your GED or learning the English language is an investment that opens doorways for personal, professional and economic growth," the company notes on its foundation's website. "It is the one gift that no one can take away- the one gift that lasts a lifetime."

One way Dollar General raises money for its foundation is through its annual golf classic. Since 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation Golf Classic has raised more than $13 million for literacy initiatives.

On Monday, Shawn Rorie and Stephen Sinclair represented BAT Logistics at the 20th annual event in Nashville, Tenn.

"We have been blessed as a company and want to extend that to as many as possible," said Rorie, co-owner and president of BAT Logistics.

BAT is strict about the business charities it supports, focusing on the percentage of donated money that actually goes to people in need.

Press Release: BAT Expands Team, Moves Into Larger Headquarters

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa- Recently, BAT Logistics, one of the fastest growing 3PL providers of transportation services, added seven new people to its team and moved to a larger headquarters to accommodate company's growth. In addition, a National Accounts team was added, and a Military Accounts team is forming.

BAT hired Maureen Shea and Joel Staley to the East Region Dispatch team, Marissa Rodriguez and Lacey Carlson to the West Region Dispatch team, Joe Kier to the National Accounts team and Ralph Blanks,Donnie Craig and Krysten Parrish to the Central Region Dispatch team.

"Our old office was at 95 percent capacity, which only took us three and a half years to hit," said Jarrod Marinello, co-owner and executive vice president of BAT Logistics. "We had planned for it to take us five years, so this is a good thing."

The new space, at 20 Arena Way, Suite 2, is 5600 square feet and holds 50 people. It is double the size of the previous office. BAT moved to the new location in late August.

"Everyone loves the new location," Marinello said. "Our old office was in Papillion, Neb. in more of a suburban area, while the new office is right off a major interstate right inside Council Bluffs."

The new National Accounts team is managed by Ashley Jankowski, who formerly worked on the East Region team. Military freight has been a big growth area for BAT over the last quarter, and the team to handle Military Accounts is lead by Liz Staley, BAT's operations manager.

Each region's team increased its personnel to stay ahead of demand. BAT has had a record percent growth this year.

BAT Strengthens Online Presence

Over the past week, you may have noticed BAT Logistics getting a little more social on the web. Our Facebook page got a little face lift, and we added Twitter and Google+ accounts to our social media.

But, we're not stopping there.

Our blogs from now on will be restructured into four categories, each with the following headers:

  • Press Release - We have always posted press releases here among other blog posts, but now it will be easier for the media to identify them.

  • In the Media - When BAT appears in media, we'll let you know where with a link to the source.

  • Echo - Bats use echoes, the repeating of sound as it bounces off a surface, to see. We can only see our future by keeping up with industry news and supporting our clients.  Extended family news will now be "echoed" in our blogs.

  • Spelunking - Spelunking is the exploration of caves, making it the perfect header for blogs that let you explore our cave and the people who work inside it.

To keep up-to-date on all your BAT news, be sure to follow this blog and all our social media accounts.

BAT Logistics Keeps On Trucking

BAT Logistics, provider of 3rd Party Logistics and Transportation solutions, recently wrapped up its 3rd year of upward growth.

Over the past year, BAT's repeated execution has led to an increase in the amount of dedicated freight that the company has been awarded.

"The company continues to grow internally while  increasing its bottom line. Its a big accomplishment that we were able to grow all aspects of the business organically, add more employees, donate to a half-dozen charities, and still come out increasing our bottom line by double digits," said partner Jarrod Marinello.

BAT plans to grow its staff by 25 percent in 2012, as demand for its services soars.
